Charles
Baudelaire/A Dark Version of Romanticism
[ send

A 5 page research paper that examines poetry by French poet Charles Baudelaire.
The writer argues that while the romanticism of Wordsworth, Keats and Shelley

also a natural part of the natural world. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

Comparison
Of The Works Of Phillis Wheatley & Paul Laurence Dunbar
[ send

A 10 page paper comparing the work and the outlook of the two authors. Phillis
Wheatley traditionally is considered to be the first black American poet. Though
Paul Laurence Dunbar was born nearly a century after Wheatley's death, the two
share common traits other than their skin color. Dunbar was the first black
American poet that was widely read and sold. That they were involved in the
evolution of American literature at all is in itself amazing, even without the
firsts in their lives and in their work. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

Contrasts
or commonalities? Poet, writer, romantic or realist
[ send
me this paper ]
(5 pp) In spite of the external way that we may appear to others, most of us do
want some type of order in our lives. One way to do that, on an intellectual
basis, is the method of categories - some would call "pigeon-holing"
bits of history together, so they stay somewhat orderly in our minds. The
labels, romantic, realist, poet, and writer, are all ways of doing that very
thing. What happens if we should run into someone who is all four? The author
will examine that puzzle, through the works of Wordsworth, Ibsen and Tagore.

Conundrum
of Choice
[ send
me this paper ]
(5 pp.) Conundrum is a fifty-cent word, which means "riddle." That is
often what a choice is. It involves information, intuition and risk; sometimes
it appears that spitting into the wind has as much possibility as the
productivity of choice. But, who knows, maybe the wind will suddenly change. In
examining the idea of change, one way to look at it is through poetry. The ideas
of poetry move more fluidly, and are more open to introspection than prose.
Poets and poems considered in this discussion will be " Lucille Clifton -
"the Lost Baby Poem;" Robert Frost - "Stopping by a Snowy
Wood;" and W.H. Auden - "The Unknown Citizen."

A 5 page paper discussing the one who would have for her epitaph, 'Excuse My

on New York's most outrageous list. She was in her stride in the roaring 20s
when social taboos dropped with regularity, money flowed freely and speakeasies
were the naughty entertainment of the evening. Long, flowery passages were
unknown to her, but the quirk of the off-hand put down was not. Not content to

seemingly all of them to her own life as well. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

E.
E. Cummings and Baudelaire's dog.
[ send
me this paper ]
(3 pp) Baudelaire writes of a dog that was in love with its own feces, and
disdained all those nice cover-up smells. Comparisons have been made with the
public in general who disdains the experimental in the same way. What is
happening is not obscene or even foul smelling, rather it is the dog is familiar
with its own smells, and may even be content with them. When basic functions are
described it - the dog - the public - has difficulty with change. Translating
change into dog shit does take some getting used to - Baudelaire loved being
graphic, and sometimes that takes getting used to as well. That same quality of
foreign-ness can be applied to the work of poet, E.E. Cummings.

A 6 page paper discussing the common dichotomy of the illusion appearance can

successful appearance that today cloaks so many people who tirelessly pursue the
trappings of the 'successful' life in which score is kept by watching the
neighbors or even the demographic division to which either an individual belongs
or would like to belong. Richard Cory would appear to be not that one who lived

love. “Adam’s Curse” is not unique in its ability to express those broad
and often disturbing visions of the experience of love and loss. Many of Yeats’
love poems also convey such sentiments and “Never Give All the Heart” and
“O Do not Love too Long” are also examined. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

A 5 page essay that examines the poem "Good People" by Maura Stanton.
The writer argues that throughout the vast majority of human history and human

they lived their lives surrounded by a relatively small group of people to whom
they were intimately connected by familial and social bonds. Those bonds have
been broken in the modern world and set individuals, like Stanton's narrator,
adrift in a world that has no anchors. Yet, in the final lines, there is a

Modernist
Poetry: Baudelaire and Rilke.
[ send

(5pp) One of the wonderful things about old-fashioned roll-top desks, was that
there were many cubbyholes for sorting out "things;" then if there was
still too much mess, one had the option of just pulling down the top cover and
hiding it all. There are times when we hope that is true with the arts-that it
can be arranged and ordered, and that which we do not understand, can simply be
covered, or hidden. Artistic "modernism" was not content with historic
pigeon-holing and sought to give voice to individualism, and expression to that
part of our world that was locked between two world wars. The work of Baudelaire
and Rilke in the Moderist framework will be considered. Bibliography lists 5

Poetry

25 pages in length. Poetry is the expression of one's very soul. It encompasses
a great many emotions, feelings, and desires that can range from one spectrum to
the other. Often represented in poetry are rage, love, happiness, sorrow and
despair. Poetry is an avenue for the author to release the inner struggles that
can be set free through no other means than verse. It can be a catharsis to
one's ailing heart as much as it can be a conduit between two otherwise
strangers. Poetry is as diverse a means of communication as any medium, yet
there are a vast array of elements that make up this very unique and specialized
form of writing. The writer will address the many aspects of poetry as they
relate to creating the poem. Bibliography lists 11 sources.

Frost’s “Departmental”
[ send

This 5 page report discusses the poem “Departmental” and the fact human
beings behave like animals, even insects, in a number of similar ways. This poem

not directly affected by an event, he or she need not be concerned. Somebody
else will handle it. “Departmental” serves as a metaphor for the ways in
which people compartmentalize their world in order to assure they are able to
continue to go about their business, regardless of the circumstances they
encounter. Bibliography lists only the poem as a source.

spirit in the grea t drama of existence. Doesn't that definition sound elegant?
When was the last time that you acknowledged your role in the "great drama
of existence?" The reason that I mention this is that the study of
"metaphysics," is becoming more popular each year. Yet, what we will
look at in this discussion is the historic roots of the form as seen through the

The
Poetry Of Love
[ send
me this paper ]
(7 pp). If we were to guess, we might feel comfortable in saying that more has
been written about love, over time, than any other emotion. It is poetry that
seems to lend itself more to the ideal definition of love. Should we suppose
that as humans we long for it so; or are we to believe that we will never quite
"get it right" and poets might give us some advice about this most
supreme of emotions. This discussion will look at various idealized expressions
of love over time, and through a poetical element, analyze that work. We are
probably more aware of some of these "Valentine-like" first lines than
we are of the poets themselves, but the poets who will be used are Marlowe,
Lewis, Hardy, Browning, Johnson and Purdy.

This 5 page report discusses two poems, Emily Dickinson’s “632” and

Romance of Tristan and Iseult
[ send

(5 pp.) The theme of the age-old story of Tristan and Iseut is that of duty
versus desire. The classic version involves a love triangle, one in which
unplanned love occurs and challenges the existing love created by duty. This has
been played out by Arthur, Guenevere, and Lancelot as well as Mark, Tristan and
Iseult. Naturally the intensity of duty and desire must be equal to really add
drama and poignancy to the mix. This discussion will examine Mathew Arnold's
version of Tristan and Iseult (1852).

The
Speaking Picture in Poetry
[ send
me this paper ]
A 10 page paper which discusses how renaissance poetry has often been seen as a
body of work which presents a speaking picture. Poetry is much like painting in
that it attempts to portray one moment in time, or one moment of thought, into
words. It paints a picture full of images that allows us to envision in our
minds, what the poet sees, feels, and thinks. Literature, the other art form
using language, cannot do this due to the fact that it focuses on a great number
of events, people, and thoughts. The paper discusses considerations concerning
this form of art, with the work of English poet Francis Quarles being the
primary focus in relationship to speaking pictures. Bibliography lists 6
sources.

The
Status of Women as shown in Poetry.
[ send
me this paper ]
(5 pp) Poetry is often thought of as the language of feelings. The wonderful
thing that we have finally learned about feelings is, that they are neither
right or wrong -they just exist. It is usually thought, that one person does not
make another feel a certain way. Rather a given feeling may exist in the

Thematic
Similarities: T.S. Eliot - The Wasteland. R. Chandler - The Long Goodbye.
[ send
me this paper ]
(5 pp) Sometimes the things unite two works of fiction are the most obvious, and
so we do not even consider them. Such may be the case with Raymond Chandlers,
The Long Goodbye and T.S. Eliot's poem The Wasteland: one is about a mystery,
and one is mystery. It would be nice if it were settled that easily, wouldn't
it? But not nearly so much fun, as if we see what other elements might tie these
diverse appearing works together.

Whitman/ Structure in Song of Myself

patterns of life, death, and Whitman's perceptions of the nature of God. No

“Mozart,
1935” by Wallace Stevens
[ send
me this paper ]
This 5 page report discusses poet Wallace Stevens’ (1879-1955) work “Mozart,
1935.” As Mozart played the present during his life, Stevens will now “play
the present” through his own interpretive lyricism which is every bit as
compelling in the context of poetry in the 20th century as Mozart’s music was
compelling to his admirers of the 18th century. By having the pianist play the
out of tune piano, the sound, not necessarily the music, works to drown out the
voices of the angry stone-throwers in the street. It is a subtle poem set
against the background of the Great Depression and offering ideas regarding the
impact an artist can make regardless of the style he or she chooses to use. No
additional sources.

understanding that he could not, nor could his poetry, be categorized under the
singular adjective of “nihilistic,” even while his hopelessness conveys a
sense of utter despair. No additional sources.
